Every spring, one of the most historic stops on the American clay court season returns to Houston as the River Oaks Clay Court Championship brings together rising stars, experienced veterans, and passionate tennis fans. This first stop on the American clay court swing is known for its intimate atmosphere at the picturesque River Oaks Country Club.
This year’s field includes the past three champions in Jenson Brooksby, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, as well as 2019 Champion, Cristian Garin. The star power doesn’t stop there, as patrons will get to see highly ranked ATP players in Tommy Paul, Alejandro Tabilo and Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who seems to excel on the Houston clay courts. A crop of rising American stars featuring Learner Tien, Alex Michelsen and Brandon Nakashima will look to make their mark.
It is hard to bet against Frances Tiafoe, as he has been a finalist in each of the previous three U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships and winning the ATP 250 title in 2023. With that being said, there is a lot of star power in the field this year, and I believe the youth movement will prevail.
PREDICTIONS:
- Champion: Ben Shelton
- Runner-Up: Learner Tien
- Dark Horse: Alex Michelsen
